Summertime Art Notes…

The Fireplace Project presenting us with 2 innovative shows: one now finished entitled “Intimacy” the other “Boys of Summer”. First, the boys. These pictures are just what the name implies. Boys stretched out, glamming it up, lounging mostly in the nude…however they’re also some really first rate paintings by actual painters. Paul P who is featured heavily in this show has been a long time favorite of mine, ever since I caught onto his Proustian bent which if you know my installation, would have grabbed my attention no matter the sensibility. It happens that his sensibility kills me so there you are. Next to Paul P, who is a veteran and widely exhibited, comes Natalya Laskis, also with several pieces. I could find out very little here except that this may be one of his first shows. Wonderful, inventive stuff especially “Camp Fire After Fly Fishing”. This show will be up for the next few weeks till September 30th. All details on www.thefireplaceproject.com. The show” Intimacy”, could have as easily been called alienation, but who cares about that…not I. Personally when videos get involved it drowns a lot out around it so to me this show was either about white spaces, sculptures, combines, all stressing separation or videos doing the same. My favorite - Malcom Mclaren “shallow 1-21″ - an actually absorbing little piece. Tracy E Min’s “For her” seemed caring. All in all these shows are a summer breeze compared with most of the self important stuff out here so when in the Springs, go but call first as the schedule is mostly weekends now. Quickly, I would like to mention another outstanding contribution to the gallery scene…the Drawing Room in East Hampton. Caio Fonseca’s beautiful work will be there thru September 29th. Again…a seasoned painter who throws little slivers of color onto abstract washed out backgrounds producing canvases that sound like jazz rifts set off with time travel. …till next week.. Dora Frost is featured in TheHamptons.com Fine Art Gallery and has been working directly from nature on over size pastels of peonies. She is working on these in her studio in Manhattan. Simultaneously, in her studio on Long Island, she is working on a narrative installation revolving around Proust’s character, the Duchesse DeGuarmantes. Ms. Frost believes that for her, living inside of two or three completely different bodies of work allows for a sense freedom, eliminating the controlled idea of the limiting style identification/personality implicit in being identified with predominately one thing…beckoning in once again the thingness of the made object. To see how her art has evovled please have a look at Dora’s past exhibit which debuted with TheHamptons.com in 1995. |
