michael got it right ... gail miller's room at the sagaponack showhouse was an insight into her present work ... very eclectic and truly a delight in this day of 'repeat' fill-up rooms ... her sense of color, texture & place work to make her rooms a joy to be in ... very cool & exciting as well ... keep up the dream ...

Thanks for the comments. I too thought Gail's room was terrific. It was really satisfying to see the kind of adventurous thinking I talked about in my article, and hoped to see happen at the showhouse. I loved her concept, her colors and fabrics, the art she chose--and the exciting way it all came together.

I have been in more than one of Mrs. Shields-Miller's residences - both in NYC and in the country. I have always been impressed with how she is able to mix cutting edge style with practicality and still reflect the homeowners unique personality. It doesn't hurt that they are always the main topic of conversation among the neighbors either!

All of the rooms are indeed amazing! It did seem as though many of the rooms are quite restrained. The one exception is the one by Shields & Company Interiors. Gail stands out as the one designer who embraced the opportunity to offer visual theater - done with taste. I went to her website, and lo and behold, the residences she designed for real people are very livable.

Karen, I happen to know the family you write of. It is disgraceful. I am touched by your other comments about the shift in police behavior to protect other than "joe citizen". When one considers the behavior of the East Hampton police, one adds to your concerns. What? arresting art gallery owners and clothing vendors for giving away gifts (wine or ices)? But how do we stop this. I am too cynical. But if I weren't I would believe that journalists like yourself could orchestrate a strike in protest: "they" say the police allow the vans to park as you complain, for the sake of commerce. Commerce seems to be key. So why not a "week without shopping". Wouldn't that be easy? wouldn't that make the local governments listen? The economic sting would be noticed, but no one would get hurt... Everyone would avoid Main Street for 1 week in East Hampton to tell the Mayor and police to stop arresting people for quality of life crimes without a complaint: everyone could avoid all the shops in your school's neighborhood...just for a week...and wouldn't the police chief get wind of it?
Oh well....now I understand why journalists in countries like Argentina and China can get arrested...there, the people still protest.
