The Hamptons' PR News Wire!

Sotto Sopra – A Taste of Tuscany in Amagansett!

Right on Main Street in Amagansett is a modest entrance to a very chic and much larger then meets the eye Tuscan restaurant! Sotto Sopra with its modern, yellow canopy and wide open front instantly invites passers-by inside from the outdoors – but on the side is a discreet red carpet entrance with much more implication of a grander restaurant. Joseph Smith and Ricky Passarelli, the infamous owners of Bobby Van’s Steakhouses, opened Sotto Sopra last season with the two-star Michelin recipient Josh Savi, previously of Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud in Dublin, Ireland as Executive Chef. They score again with this new institution added to the list of impeccable world class restaurants under their supervision.

Whether you sit inside or out on the patio, you’re still going to feel the openness that lends itself to each and every table because of the floor to ceiling windows. We chose to sit inside to get the full 360 composite. Cedar-paneled walls adorned with mirrors reflected the garden atmosphere while a zen quotient infused the indoors for a super comfy atmosphere. Tables were juxtaposed so that a table for two was not sandwiched too closely between other tables allowing for amiable exchanges and private conversation without including others (The Hamptons is an international hub but still…a small community)! The aroma emanating from the wood fired pizzas rode the Atlantic currents throughout and must have reached a few nostrils all the way down Main Street! Nothing cozier then the smell of a wood fire.

Matt, our waiter, was very prompt in coming over the moment we were seated and extremely courteous as well – helpful but not overbearing. We took him up on his suggestion of indulging in the Seafood Bouquet for two which was a generous portion for each of us of lobster tails, colossal shrimp and succulent, meaty Indonesian lump crab. What better to start off a summer dinner then with a glass of crisp Sauvignon Blanc and fresh bread dipped in a rich olive oil? mmmm! I have always been a bread and wine person. I ordered the Spaghettini a la Greco which was spaghettini with shrimp and spinach in a spicy arrabbiata sauce accompanied by an oaky Chardonnay while Kat went for heartier fare – the Braciole Rosmarino – a grilled skirt steak served with arugula and rosemary sauce paired appropriately with a Pino Noire. The Italian menu is precisely that and divided into sections of Antipasto, Insalate, Le Pizza, Primi Piatti, Pesce, Carne and Classico Bisteccheria! Il Dolce Bacio {dessert} was an impressive array of confections and its famous gelatos and sorbettos that were impossible to resist – but we must confess we also gave in to temptation and tried the lemon tart and chocolate almond caramel cake!! Perhaps it twas Matt who helped us go for the gold : )

Sotto Sopra boasts an original cocktail menu with an extensive wine list that will please any palate. Sophisticated yet simple is always a great combination where casual attire is as welcome as is the more formal Hamptons’ style. Be sure to put this one on your list and let Sotto Sopra’s lovely co-owner, Rose, know you got the word from us!
