Harriet Mayor Fulbright

Harriet Mayor Fulbright has spent most of her professional life in the field of education - as teacher, administrator and spokesperson. She taught English composition and creative writing at Ewha Women's University in Seoul, Korea, and English speaking, reading and writing to non-English speaking first graders in Moscow, USSR.

In the 1970's, she taught art at American University in Washington, D.C., and for five years was chair of the art department at Maret School. In 1983, after two years as Assistant Director of the Congressional Arts Caucus on Capitol Hill, she ran the 25th International Congress for Art Historians from the National Gallery of Art. In 1987 she became the Executive Director of the Fulbright Association. Three years later, she and Senator Fulbright were married. This year, the Fulbright Program celebrates its 50th anniversary and Mrs. Fulbright has been traveling extensively at home and abroad as spokesperson for the program and for international education exchange.

In addition, Mrs. Fulbright serves as President of the Center for Arts in the Basic Curriculum, a non-profit organization she founded with Eric Oddleifson, advocating educational reform and teacher training. Among her many honors, Mrs. Fulbright was named Young Audiences Honoree of the Year 1994, and she received the Maharishi Award for contributions to international understanding through education in 1989.
